There in the department “Kazakstan kitaptary” is organized the book exhibition dedicated to the centenary of the outstanding scientist-zoologist, corresponding member of the Academy of sciences of the KazSSR, doctor of science (biology) Arkadiy Sludskiy.
Arkadiy Alexandrovich Sludskiy (1912-1978) was born in the city of Teraspol (today the Republic of Moldova). He spent the years of his childhood and youth in Siberia.
The first rudiments of the future scientist showed in this regionof ancient fur trade. When he was twelve years old, he starts working at the Siberia hunting-trade station in Novosibirsk city. In 1930 he enters the Irkutsk fur-raw materials institute, and the last courses he studied in Balashikha city of the Moscow region.
In 1935 after graduating from the All-Union zootechnical institute of the fur-raw materials economy, A.A.Sludskiy came to work to Kazakhstan to Almaty city, forever tying his destiny with this city.
His first appointment – the senior hunting inspector of the association “Kazzagotpushnina” of the People’s Commisariat of External Trade of the USSR.
In the 1930-s-1960-s there before the hunting inspecting scienceof the country stood the tasks for the investigation of the ways and methods of widening the raw materials base of fur trade through the involvement of the spring-summer secondary kinds and acclimatization of valuable hunting-trade beasts (the ondatra etc.). He immediately participates in the acclimatization of the ondatra in Kazakhstan. In 1938 A.A.Sludskiy organized in Almaty city the Kazakhstani scientific-research hunting-trade station of the People’s Commisariat of External Trade of the USSR.
In the course of 1935-1939 the scientist investigated the Southern shore of Balkhash, the deltas of the rivers Ili and Amu-Darya, the Alakol lake, and also the estuaries of the rivers Aksu, Karatal, Chu, Turgai and others. In all of these water reservoires by his recommendadtion there was released the ondatra, and as the result of which between 1940-1960-s Kazakhstan becomes the main supplier of the hides of this animal in the Soviet Union.
Beginning 1948 in the course of 30 years A.Sludskiy occupies the post of the head of the laboratory of the mammals of the Institute of zoology of the Academy of sciences of the KazSSR. In 1958-1969 he heads the Kazakhstani affiliate of the All-Union scientific-research institute of animal raw materials and fur, in 1967-1971 – the Institute of zoology of the Academy of sciences of the KazSSR.
His first scientific works A.Sludskiy published already in 1930 in the special hunting-trade literature. The general list of works includes approximately 200 titles, including more than 10 monographs: “The wolf and how to fight him in Kazakhstan” (1937), “Suslik-peschannik” (1938), “The fur animals of Kazakhstan” (1939), “The ondatra and its acclimatization in Kazakhstan” (1948), “Saigak in Kazakhstan” (1955), “The proliferation of the jeiran” (1956), “The famines in the Eurasian steppes and deserts” (1953, 1963), “To preserve for the progeny” (1982) and many others.
The scientist was also interested in birds and published several dozens of scientific articles in ornitology. Many of his works received high estimates of domestic and foreign zoologists and hunting experts and quite rightly were classified as belonging to “the golden fond” of classical and hunting-trade literature. A.Sludskiy received wide popularity in our country and abroad for the participation in the publication of the world-wide known register named “The mammals of the Soviet Union” (1967, 1972).
