The book-exhibition of the oldest Russian book series “The life of remarkable people” has been organized in the department of world literature.
“The life of remarkable people” (“LRP”) – the series of biographical and fiction and biographical books was founded in 1890 by an outstanding Russian educator F.F. Pavlenkov ( 1839-1900) and was proceeded in 1933 by M.Gorky (1868-1956). The series is the first universal collection of biographies in Russian. The 200-volumed Pavlenkov’s library of (“LRP”) was published since 1890 till 1915 ( after his death the project of the series was finished by his executors ) and was a success among the readers of all ages, having withstood 40 prerevolutionary Reprints, their total circulation is 1.5 million copies. Designed for a wide readers’ range, books of Pavlenkov series were small in volume, but unusually intensive in content.
In January 1933 there came out the first issues of Gorky’s series “LRP”, published by “Newspaper and magazine association”, commemorated themselves the second birth the most extensive and the only universal collection of biographies. Gorky tried to involve in the cooperation the best writers, both Russian and foreign: there about remarkable people must write remarkable writers is the main leitmotif. In 1938 by disbanding “Newspaper and magazine association” the series “LPR”, already without Gorky, but in accordance with his desire, was transferred to the “The young gvardjya”, the central youth publishing house of the country. Since then this publication wasn’t interrupted. During “the young gvardjya” period “LPR” truly flourished.
There came out the series of “LPR”: Abkhazian, Azerbaijan, Latvian, Lithuanian, Kara-Kalpak, Moldovan, Tajik, Turkmen, Uzbek, Ukrainian, Chuvash, Yakut. Recently the series was revitalized. Its annual publications are 50-60 new biographies and reprints now, is almost twice as many than in the Soviet times. The range of the writers has expanded. There aren’t only professional writers, but also philologists and philosophers, historians, art critics, specialists of the most various fields of human activity you can see among them. For today there within the framework of the series “The life of remarkable people’’ were published more than 1400 book titles, with a total circulation of 100 million of copies.
There at the book-exhibition are shown the books of the series ‘’The life of remarkable people” from the fond the National library of the RK, published from 1891 till 2011.
