Tole bi Aliubekuly (1663-1756) – the outstanding public figure, one of the famous biis of the Kazakh khanate, the chief bii of the Great clan, orator and poet.
Tole bi was born in the valley Zhaisan, on the bank of the river Chu in the Jambyl region. Beginning from 15-20 years of age he participated in the meetings of the biis, where he was started to be acknowledged because of his art of eloquence and the sense of justice. Tole bi was the supporter of equality of women and men. In the period of the unification of the calns Tole bi occupied the post of the supreme judge and was deemed to be the chief bii (great bi) of all the clans. But under the influence of the Kazakh-Djungar clashes the single Kazakh khanate started to disintegrate into a number of small khanates. Tole bi becoming the chief bii of the Greater clan, headed the people’s resistance. In 1733 Tole bi was one of the initiators of coming of the Greater clan under the Russian rule. In accordance with the certificate dated June 10, 1734 the Greater clan was accepted under the Russian rule. During the rule of Tauke-khan (1680-1718) together with Aiteke-bi and Kazybek-bi, Tole bi elaborated the chief code of laws of the Kazakh khanate “Zhety zhargy”. Thanks to his wisdom, justice he had great influence in all the clans. He was respected and glorified by the akyns and zhyraus, his opinion was respected by the biis of the Middle and Lesser clans. Being the chief bii of the Greater clan he assisted in the construction in Chymkent, Turkestan, Tashkent of many buildings which today are sight-seeing places. After his death Tole bi was buried in Tashkent in the mausoleum of Karlygash bii.
There were named after Tole-bi the districts in the Jambyl, Southern-Kazakhstani regions and a street in Almaty.
There at the exhibition are presented the encyclopaedic and reference editions, books on the history of the establishment of the Kazakh statehood, the code of laws “Zhety Zhargy”. Also there is presented literature about the life and activity of Tole-bi. A special place at the exhibition are occupied by the materials from the rare fond of the National library of the RK.
