   There in the Department of periodical editions is organized the exhibition dedicated to the 90-th birthday of the regional newspaper “Atyrau”.

   “Atyrau” is the public-political newspaper of the Atyrau region. The first weekly uyezd newspaper in the Kazakh language “Erik” appeared on April 1, 1923. With its appearance there was laid the basis for the today regional newspaper “Atyrau”.

   In subsequent years in accordance with the requirements of the times the newspaper was called “Zhumysker tily” (1924), “Zhem zhumysshylary” (1932), “Sostialdy kurylyska” (September, 1933), “Sostialdy kurylys” (November, 1933), “Kommunistyk enbek” (May, 1963). Beginning from June, 1990 the newspaper is published under the name “Atyrau”.

   The newspaper “Atyrau” is one of the first publications of the national periodical press of Western Kazakhstan.

   The basis of the newspaper and of its material base was laid by first secretary of the Guiyev uyezd party committee Tulepkerei Uteuliyev. In his main article published in the first number of the newspaper “Erik” he calls the people for enlightenment and literacy.

   At the beginning of 2000 the circulation of the newspaper was 10 thousand copies, as for today it reached 26 thousand. At the present time there in the editorial stuff and the correspondents corps work 30 workers.

   In the spiritual life of the region the newspaper occupies an especial place, frequently playing the role of the initiator of discussion of topical problems of society and the search for their solution. Many well-known poets and writers such as: Abu Sarsenbayev, Askar Tokmagambetov, Sabit Mukanov, Gabdol Slanov, Khamit Ergaliyev, Zhumeken Nezhmedenov, Berkhair Amanshin, Zeinulla Kabdolov, Abish Kekilbayev were published upon the pages of the newspaper. There in the editorial stuff of the newspaper began their creative activity Tauman Amandosov, Mendekesh Satybaldiyev, Fariza Ongarsynova, Marat Iskakov and other well-known poets; the journalists – Nureden Muftakhov, Tilek Dauletov, Izimbergen Iskhozhin; the first translators of world classics into the Kazak and Karakalpak languages – Zhusip Zhantorin, Kydyrgali Sasykov.

   In 1973 the newspaper was awarded with the order “Kurmet belgisy”, in 1990 it was awarded the All-union prize after M.I.Uliyanov.
